What do students need before going abroad?

Before going abroad, students should make sure their courses, language skills and academic plan are in order. In IMS, the semester abroad should fit the programme structure, and students are advised to clarify course recognition before departure so that credits can be transferred properly. It is also important to review practical steps such as housing, deadlines and any language requirements early enough to avoid stress later on.

What if a semester abroad is not possible?

In case a semester abroad is not possible, IMS offers an international project study as an alternative. This lets students still gain international experience and work on an approved project in an international context - an Internship abroad or in Germany for international students.

Consequently, the IMS Master's program remains flexible while keeping the global perspective and international experience.

Why is the semester abroad worth it?

The semester abroad gives students more than a change of location - it builds the kind of international experience employers value.

Living and studying in another academic environment helps students strengthen interpersonal skills such as: independence, adaptability, intercultural communication and confidence, all of which are useful in careers in international marketing and sales.

It also gives them real context for working with different markets, cultures, people and ways of thinking, which can make them more prepared for global roles after graduation.

Annica collage from semester abroad in Montpellier, France
Annica in Montpellier - Université de Montpellier

"My semester abroad during the International Marketing and Sales Master's program at FH Münster was one of the most enriching experiences of my studies. Over six months at the Université de Montpellier in France, I gained not only academic input from a different university system, but also a deeper understanding of French culture, everyday life, and what it means to study and live independently in a new environment.

FH Münster prepared me well before departure. I felt confident about the transition into the life abroad. Once I arrived in Montpellier, the host institution welcomed us with a orientation meeting and a city tour. It was easy to settle in both socially and academically.

Montpellier itself was a wonderful place to live and study. The city has a lively student atmosphere, beautiful streets, and a strong French identity that made everyday life feel exciting and authentic. I especially appreciated how much I learned outside the classroom - becoming more confident in French, more open in intercultural situations, and more aware of how different academic and social routines can be from one country to another. This experience taught me to be more independent, adaptable, and aware of cultural differences in communication, study habits, and everyday interactions.

For incoming IMS students at FH Münster, I would say that it is not just a semester away from home - it is a chance to grow academically, personally, and interculturally."

Kristina in Busan - Pusan National University, South Korea

"My semester abroad during the International Marketing and Sales Master's program at FH Münster, spent at Pusan National University in Busan, was a truly eye-opening experience. It combined academic learning, cultural discovery, and personal growth. Spending six months in South Korea gave me the chance to step into a completely different environment and learn how much you grow when you leave your comfort zone.

From the beginning I received support from both FH Münster and Pusan National University, helping me to prepare well before departure with all the necessary information. Once I arrived in Busan, the host university was welcoming and supportive, which made it easy to settle in and focus on my studies.

Busan itself impressed me from the very beginning. It is a city where modern life, university energy, and the sea come together in a unique way. Living there taught me how to appreciate a culture that values respect, discipline, and community, while also being incredibly dynamic and forward-looking. Culturally, I learned to be more observant, more adaptable, and more open to communication styles different from my own - lessons that will stay with me long after my return.

My semester abroad in Busan strengthened my confidence, expanded my perspective, and showed me how valuable it is to live and study in a completely different environment. For incoming IMS students at FH Münster, I would say: be curious, stay open, and trust that the experience will shape you in ways you cannot fully expect at the beginning"

Yara collage from semester abroad in Kristiansand, Norway
Yara in Kristiansand - University of Agder

"My semester abroad during the International Marketing and Sales Master's program at FH Münster, spent at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, was one of the most valuable experiences of my studies. Over six months, I gained not only academic knowledge from a different university system, but also a deeper understanding of Norwegian culture, everyday life, and what it means to study and live on your own in a new environment.

This experience was especially smooth due to the strong support offered by FH Münster, which prepared me well before departure - I felt ready and confident about every step of the move abroad. Once I arrived in Kristiansand, the University of Agder welcomed me warmly and made it easy to find my place, both socially and academically.

Kristiansand itself was a beautiful place to live and study. The city felt calm, open, and close to nature, which created the perfect setting to focus on both my studies and personal growth. What surprised me most was the Norwegian way of balancing efficiency with a relaxed and respectful atmosphere - a completely different way of working and learning that broadened my perspective. During my time abroad, I became more independent, more confident in new situations, and more aware of how cultural differences shape the way people communicate, study, and interact in daily life.

My advice to incoming IMS students at FH Münster: step outside your comfort zone before you feel ready - because in Kristiansand, I learned that growth rarely announces itself in advance."

Max collage from semester abroad in Cape Town, South Africa
Max in Cape Town - University of Cape Town

"My semester abroad during the International Marketing and Sales Master's program at FH Münster, spent at the University of Cape Town, was an unforgettable experience. It combined academic challenge, cultural depth, and personal growth. Over six months, I studied in one of the most inspiring settings I have ever encountered and returned with a fundamentally broader view of what international learning can truly be.

Both FH Münster and the host university offered a strong balance of guidance and personal freedom - I left feeling well prepared and confident enough to navigate a completely new environment from day one.

Cape Town is a city unlike any other. Its contrasts, energy, and diversity created a constant backdrop for reflection, pushing me to engage not just with my studies but with the world around me. What stayed with me most was how much I learned simply by being present - absorbing the city's history, its social complexity, and the very different life experiences of the people I met along the way. That kind of learning cannot happen in a lecture hall. During my time there I grew more comfortable with uncertainty, more willing to sit with questions I could not immediately answer, and more conscious of how deeply culture shapes the way people think, communicate, and build relationships.

For incoming IMS students at FH Münster, my advice is simple: arrive with curiosity, resist the urge to stay in familiar circles, and let Cape Town surprise you - because it will."

Leonard collage from semester abroad in Tampa, USA
Leonard in Tampa - University of Florida

"My semester abroad during the International Marketing and Sales Master's program at FH Münster, spent at the University of South Florida in Tampa, changed the way I think about international business, communication, and my own abilities. Over six months, I gained not only new knowledge from an American classroom, but also the confidence and flexibility that only come from fully living in a different country.

FH Münster prepared me well from the start - the support before departure was clear and practical, so by the time I arrived in Tampa I felt ready for what was ahead. The University of South Florida made settling in easy, with a welcoming campus culture that made it simple to feel part of the community from the very first week. What stood out most about Tampa was its energy.

The city is diverse, lively, and full of drive - and that spirit naturally influenced how I approached my studies and connected with students from all over the world. Being surrounded by so many different nationalities made me think more deeply about how culture shapes the way people work, communicate, and make decisions in international business contexts. I came back to FH Münster with stronger intercultural skills, a clearer idea of the kind of marketing and sales professional I want to be, and friendships that reach across different countries and cultures.

For incoming IMS students at FH Münster, my advice is simple: give it everything you have, because the best parts of this experience happen outside the lecture hall."
